{life} This Is 40: Here’s What I’ve Learned So Far

My friend Whitney wrote a beautiful post when she turned 40 a few years back, and it has stuck with me. It inspired me to write this, on the day of my own 40th birthday.

Articles like this always have contemplative pictures of sunsets. So here you go.

I am not afraid to turn 40, but I am a little afraid for the world that I am now what passes for a responsible adult! Once you’re 40, there is no more pretending you’re not really a real adult. I grew up thinking that adults–like people who are 40–have all the answers. I guess I’m still a little stunned that I do not have all (or even very many) of the answers.

But I have definitely learned some things here and there, so I wanted to share them on this special day.

15 Things I Know Now That I Am 40

1. Don’t sweat the small stuff. I know, that is a cliche, but hear me out. Every time you allow yourself to feel rage at a person who cuts you off on the freeway, you are wasting rage that could be better directed towards something really important, like inequality, injustice, running out of sauvignon blanc, etc. [Read more →]

{i can’t even} 10 of the Absolute Worst Ideas on Pinterest

There are a lot of bad ideas on Pinterest, but these are some of the ones I personally find to be the worst. And if you knew how many times I thought “I can’t even” during the writing of this post you would start painting acorns or something.

So without further ado, these are ten of the worst ideas on Pinterest.

1. “Weird and Wacky Bologna Cake”

worst ideas on pinterest

Just so we’re clear, this abomination of a “cake” is made of bologna, cream cheese, dry ranch dressing mix, and squirt cheese. Let me just give you a moment to throw up in your mouth.

An Open Letter to the Guy Who Is Annoyed That I Brought a Small Child on This Flight

Dear fellow citizen,

Here we are sharing that most intimate of experiences, the economy section of a modern airplane. Welcome! I can see by the sour, pained look on your face that you have already decided that you hate me and everything I stand for because I am traveling with a small child. I sense you are annoyed. I’d like to take this opportunity to clear the air (ha ha.)

{life hacks} I Tried A Bunch of Those Viral “Life Hacks” So You Don’t Have To

I’m sure by now you have seen countless viral emails and Facebook posts sharing “life hacks” offering ideas on how to use simple, everyday ideas and items to make your life easier. Well, I thought I’d try a few out and let you know how it went.

Don’t miss:

“Pancake Mix in a Ketchup Bottle”

Here is a riddle: what’s white, viscous, and doesn’t go easily through a funnel? If you answered “pancake mix” you’re right. If you put pancake mix in a ketchup bottle, is it truly a “no-mess experience?” Once the mix is in there, maybe. But you have to get the pancake mix into the ketchup bottle first. Which makes an ungodly mess. And not to be judgy, but if you have time to put your pancake mix in a bottle and all, wouldn’t that time have been better spent making tastier pancake mix from scratch? I’m just sayin’. But yeah, don’t do this.

{side project} Welcome to My Massive Mid-Century Modern Renovation

Two years ago, we bought a crazy 1960s house in the wine country near Santa Rosa. This only happened because it is literally next door to my parents’ house, and that kind of opportunity just doesn’t come along every day. In fact, the folks we bought the house from has built it themselves–meaning, with their own hands–in 1963 and lived in it until the present day. What an opportunity for an eclectic mid-century remodel project! It’s been habitable and nearly done for the better part of a year, but I finally got around to photographing and compiling the whole mess. Come on in and take a look!

{old cooks’ tales} Allow Me to Debunk 10 Common Food and Cooking Myths Using Science, Facts, & Common Sense

There are so many nonsensical myths about food and cooking that people trot out, and I’m not going to lie: they make me a little grumpy. They are awful and they are persistent and they need to stop.  I reached my limit this week when I saw a viral Pinterest post about how to tell whether a bell pepper was male or female.

Once I was done shaking my head at the sheer inanity of it all, I decided to arm myself with (some) science and facts and a liberal dose of common sense to explain why some of these common food tropes are as mythological as unicorns, leprechauns, or free parking in San Francisco.
