{semi-fail} Fourth of July Flag Cake

I had really high hopes for this Fourth of July flag cake, but it did not turn out as well as I’d hoped. I would not rate it a total fail, but it’s definitely on the fail side of winning. A semi-fail, if you will.

The thing is, America is far from perfect so perhaps a highly imperfect cake is a great way to celebrate the 4th of July (especially this year.)

It looked pretty good on the outside, at least… I mean, once I covered the entire thing in blue jimmies. And it photographed pretty nicely as a whole cake. C’mon, you’d totally repin that, right?

So where did I go wrong? I think using a denser cake recipe (like I used for my Rainbow Cakes) is the key here. I used a very light, crumbly cake and it was hard to put together and hard to frost. Also I made the icing too runny and then didn’t have any more powdered sugar so it kind of spiraled downhill from there.

I do think my colors came out very flag-like, so that’s a plus.

At any rate, I let my toddler and his friends shove it in their faces so it doesn’t matter all that much anyway.

Some days things just don’t work out. That’s when we take a lesson from the wise prophet known as Cookie Monster, take a deep breath, and eat a cookie!

If you want to try it, here is a tutorial! Hopefully your cake will turn out better than mine did.

Happy Fourth of July!
